In late March, at SIGCSE 2008 in Portland, Oregon, Dr. William Fleischman presented the results of his SIGCSE Special Projects Grant. This grant was used to support the preparation and implementation of a course on Ethical Issues in Computer Science at Universidad Nova de Lisboa in Lisbon, Portugal, in 2005. The grant helped to provide the technology needed to support cooperative work between Villanova and Nova de Lisboa students, and also provide some travel support for students to attend ITiCSE 2005 in Lisbon to present posters about their projects. ITiCSE (Innovation and Technology in Computer Science Education) is a summer conference sponsored by SIGCSE every year in (or around) Europe. In large part due to the efforts of Dr. Fleischman and the support of the SIGCSE grant, ITiCSE 2005 was the first ITiCSE conference to include student posters.
In addition to Dr. Fleischman's report, the Special Topics session in Portland include reports from two other grants. Ray Lister, of the University of Technology in Sydney, Australia, presented the results of a grant entitled: Exploring the Value of Consultative Processes in Data Analysis in an Educational Setting. Chang Liu, of Ohio University and Jennifer Pollack, of the University of Mary Washington, presented the results of a grant entitled Facilitating Curriculum Material Adoption using 3D Virtual Collaboration. Below is a photo of all four presenters.
