The department's web team of AJ Palkovic, Casey Burkhardt, and Tarun Kothuri rolled out a new version of the department web site. Although it looks similar to the previous site, which was Java based, it has been completely rewritten using Ruby on Rails (ROR). That means that besides the changes to the infrastructure of the site, all the behind the scenes applications were also recoded. Due to the power of ROR, and the capabilities of these three web developers, the project only required three months of part-time work.
In addition to the infrastructure/code base changes, the site was also improved in many ways, including: widened page, revised front page layout, added coverflow-style access to image galleries, improved application interfaces and functionality, added automatic image resizing on upload, added image galleries, revised approach for submitting/approving news, improved permissions management, improved course management application interface, and creation of a large number of automated test scripts.
