The CSC Unix Network
The Department of Computing Sciences maintains a network of workstations running Sun's Solaris operating system. We sometimes refer to it as the Sun cluster. Most of the machines in the cluster are named after artists such as renoir and monet. User accounts for the cluster are set up for all students enrolled in particular CSC courses and for special projects.
You can access the Sun cluster in various ways. The systems in the cluster share a common file system, therefore it rarely matters which machine you ultimately connect to.
From single-user machines in the villanova.edu domain, you can telnet to csgate.csc.villanova.edu, which is the only machine in the cluster to which you can telnet directly. From there you must telnet or rlogin to another machine in the cluster to do your work.
Telnet access is prohibited from multi-user machines within the villanova.edu domain. For example, if you are running Linux in a dorm room, you must disable the machine's ability to act as a telnet host. Then you can connect to csgate as described above.
From outside the villanova.edu domain, you may also access the Sun cluster using secure shell version 2 (ssh2). Using an ssh2 client, connect to csgate.csc.villanova.edu, and then connect to another machine using telnet or rlogin.
Villanova students wishing to download an ssh2 client for Windows or Linux may do so at the technical support downloads page. Further instructions on how to use the ssh2 client can also be found on this page.
If you live nearby, you may want to use a terminal emulator and dial into 610-519-9445. Respond to the prompts with your LDAP username and password, and choose csgate as the host you wish to connect to. For help with your LDAP account (which is not the same as your CSC Unix username and password), you should contact the UNIT User Support Services at unit.villanova.edu/support/.
FTP access is available to csgate.csc.villanova.edu and www.csc.villanova.edu from anywhere on the Internet.
